Jonah’s misunderstanding
Jonah 1:1~3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. (3)

Jonah was a prophet during 760 B.C., before the time of captivity. God commanded Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. However, Jonah ran away to Tarshish. Along the way, he meets a great storm and enters Nineveh without any other choice to preach God’s Word. As he viewed the city of Nineveh repenting, Jonah became angry. Why did Jonah, a prophet, dislike the repentance of Nineveh? What did Jonah misunderstand?
1. Israel’s misunderstanding
The Israelites believed that they were a nation chosen by God, and that other Gentile nations were not chosen. Jonah possessed this invisible ideology as well. Many nations had their own nationalism. Although this is knowledge invisible to the naked eye, this idea serves as the greatest hindrance to world missions. The Bible states that all nations are one. Paul was a figure who realized this and he overcome the nationalism he had learned as a child and staked his life for world evangelization.
2. Jonah’s misunderstanding
After receiving the command to proclaim the Gospel in Nineveh, Jonah avoids the face of God. However, no one can avoid God. This was Jonah’s greatest misunderstanding. He attempted to avoid God’s Word and escape to Tarshish, yet he encountered a great storm and was swallowed by a whale. In the end, he comes to realize though the problems given by God. When he goes to proclaim the Gospel in Nineveh, the works of repentance arise. However, as he sees the Gentiles repent, Jonah is unable to realize God’s Word and becomes discouraged again.
3. The world church’s misunderstanding
The Jewish people and the world church are not able to distinguish original sin and consequential sin. Even believers fall into feelings of guilt because they have heard all too often about consequential sins. We were deceived by Satan and separated by God through the incident of Genesis 3. Consequently, we were taken captive by curses, disaster, and corruption. As a result of the sin that separated mankind from God, humans have also been cursed in the land. This is all because of the original sin of being separated from God. Hence, we become unaware of the spiritual problems and the existence of Satan. This is spiritual knowledge that is invisible to our eyes as well as the truth that can change our lives. Many people lose hold of this aspect and fall into misunderstanding.
- Are you living your life disregarding this important truth that is invisible to your eyes? With the absolute truth of your status and authority as a child of God, enjoy this inside the life of the evangelist.
