Hymnal #438 Since Christ My Soul From Sin Set Free (#495 in previous version)
In each age there were forces that persecuted the church. During the time of the Roman Empire, ten emperors persecuted the church for 250 years. However, no matter how much they persecuted and tried to obliterate the church, it did not disappear. How was it that the Early Church could have victory even in the midst of great persecution?
1. Focus on one faith
The Early Church focused their faith on one important thing. Those who received salvation can enjoy the blessing of the Triune God. God gives us the Word and, though unseen to our eyes, works according to the Word that He gave us. In order to accomplish His Word, Christ came, bore the cross, and fulfilled the covenant of salvation by rising from the dead. Even now, unseen to our eyes, He is with us by the Holy Spirit. The Early Church could have victory because they had faith in this one thing.
2. Focus on one power
The Early Church focused on one power. As they carried on with their ordinary life, they gave everything to prayer along with the mystery of the filling of the Holy Spirit without anyone knowing. The Early Church was a place where not anyone could come because of the edict banning all Christian gatherings. They could lose their social status, wealth, and even their life. They overcame all of these things by the power of prayer. As they gathered and prayed, King Herod the persecutor died and Peter who was sentenced to death in prison was released. The Early Church was able to have victory in the midst of difficulties by the power of prayer.
3. One set of eyes
Anyone is bound to face spiritual problems. No matter what great success one has achieved, he absolutely needs the power of the Gospel because he doesn’t have the power to overcome spiritual problems. As we are faithful to the roles given to us in the world, we must equip ourselves with the power of evangelism to save lives. On the outside we are the specialists who have outstanding skills and faithfulness, but we must be the evangelists with the full armor of the Gospel. In addition, we must do our best in serving the church so that all believers become one body. We must respect and serve others. The Early Church was able to have victory in their field and at church because they held on to this. Starting now, we must be tested and approved by God and tested and approved as evangelists as we equip ourselves with the genuine faith that even Satan has no choice but to acknowledge.
- What is the focus of my faith? Do I have my own mystery of the filling of the Holy Spirit? Am I seeing the world correctly with the eyes of the Gospel? Deeply meditate on the message.
