The progenitor of military missions

1 Samuel 17:41~49 David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (45)

In the history of humanity thus far, there have been 16,000 wars and two major world wars. The problems that arise in the military are connected to life itself. With this significance in mind, there is nothing more important that military missions. Many believers suffer while in the military. Figures like Joshua and Caleb all had military backgrounds. David, who we encountered in the Scripture, received such great answers he could be considered the progenitor of military missions. How was he able to receive such great answers? David had three time schedules.

1. The time schedule for enjoyment
David had the time schedule for enjoyment. What kind of enjoyment was it? At an early age, David met the high priest, Samuel. Through Samuel, David heard about the Philistines who considered war to be their trade without fear or regard of God, the Ark of the Covenant that had been lost to the Philistines, and the Gospel that was passed down from his ancestors. David held on to this covenant and developed his faith and skills. He also kept scheduled prayer so well that he was able to pen countless psalms. He did continuous prayer to the extent that he did not lose a single sheep in his flock. Additionally, he had the mystery of concentrated prayer whenever he faced problems.

2. Time schedule of a witness
Finally, the time schedule of a witness arrived for David. The Philistine general Goliath mocked the Lord Jehovah, and challenged the Israelites for someone who could dare oppose him. At that time, David, who was on an errand, was in the Valley of Elah and heard the bellows. After receiving the King’s permission, David brought with him a slingshot and five stones, which he used to strike and fell Goliath. David stood as a witness proclaiming that the life of man does not depend on the sword but on God’s hand.

3. Time schedule of a disciple
After the above, the time schedule of a disciple arrived for David. Many thought Saul would be pleased with David who had defeated Goliath, but instead, Saul tried to kill him. David had no choice but to begin a life as a fugitive who had to flee away from Saul and his army. It may have seemed a terrible life as a fleeing fugitive, but true soldiers and true disciples flocked to David from various places. When the soldier David eventually became the king, he was able to establish a nation steadfast in the covenant.

- David had the power of prayer. Whenever he faced problems, he sought answers, and did not cower before his circumstances or fear; rather, he waited patiently for God’s time schedule. Restoring the power of prayer is most imperative.
