What must we do when faced with difficulties, important things, or when we need to make a crucial decision? When the Israelites faced difficulties in the wilderness, Moses decreed that all Israelites and even their livestock should fast and pray. This was because they needed to receive God’s important guidance. Then, what is the covenant we must hold to today?
1. Fasting prayer
As we live our lives, we will undoubtedly experience many decisive and crucial events; each time, we as mankind need spiritual strength more than anything. The people of God have always fasted and prayed before every difficulty and important decision, and prophets have decreed that all the people in the nation ought to fast and pray (1 Samuel 7:6, Ezra 8:21, Jeremiah 36:9, Joel 2:15). This was the time for them to return wholly to prayer. At that time, they were able to have the true strength of abiding with God manifest, and they were able to properly face themselves and receive true answers. Moses did not eat or drink anything for 40 days, and instead looked to God with all of his being. As a result, Moses’ face glowed so radiantly that he even had to cover it with a cloth. It was because Moses experienced God’s otherworldly realm. Fasting is the covenantal blessing by which we can take one more step forward in the path God wants us to tread as we experience God’s indwelling and take into heart God’s Word.
2. What is more important than fasting
Mark 2:17~19 provides us with Jesus’ own interpretation regarding fasting. Fasting is a way of blessing through which we can focus all of our hearts and thoughts wholeheartedly upon asking for the Lord Jehovah. But what is more paramount is the fact that we have the Gospel and that Jesus Christ is with us. What is vital is that we accurately know what our identity and authorities are within the blessing of salvation. Simply starving ourselves when we neither know nor enjoy the Christ who is with us is foolish behavior. However, it is necessary to pray while fasting to further enjoy the mystery of Immanuel. But seeing the field through the perspective of the Gospel and evangelism, and praying while holding on to the Word is just as powerful and important as fasting. We must live our lives as evangelists every single day to gain spiritual piety in our individual fields.
- Decide on a fasting prayer for the purpose of experience God’s otherworldly realm and receive an otherworldly power. Examine every day if you are enjoying Immanuel which is more important and vital than fasting itself.
