We need individual strength
2 Timothy 2:1~7 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. (1~2)
We need individual strength ♬Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #347 We are Bound for Canaan Land (#382 in previous version)
The evangelist Paul encouraged his disciples to possess individual strength and implored them to ‘Be strong in Christ Jesus.’ The commission of a soldier, athlete and farmer can only be shouldered when we have individual strength. When we experience the power that stems from within Christ, we can begin anew in prayer, Word and evangelism which may have previously felt so far away. How do we gain the strength that comes from Christ?
1. The individual needs to have fundamental strength.
The individual needs to have strength that comes from the Gospel. Herein lies all the answers. However, we have our interests elsewhere and tend to expend our strength in irrelevant, useless matters. If we can discover in our everyday life the power that arises when we enjoy the Gospel, we can walk the path of success. When we possess the nature of enjoying the Gospel as the 7 Remnants* did, we will continue to experience answers. When we have the power that stems from the Gospel from an early age like Samuel did, we will be able to experience the work of God from a young age.
2. We must prepare for when we go to the field.
We fight many battles in the world. At times, it may seem so formidable and fearsome, as if war was being waged. However, as spiritual soldiers, we must battle with God-given power. There may come a moment where we must demonstrate our skills before a crowd. Athletes train strenuously for many years and develop their technique for the Olympics. We are like athletes who are in competition. We must demonstrate the spiritual power we have honed and developed for countless years when we step out into the world. Finally, farmers wage battle against environmental conditions. Even when dire circumstances that may wipe out an entire crop befall them, they never give up. We must have great power to emerge victorious against the things that lie before us, just like farmers.
3. We must possess power that is invisible to the eye.
Because we must wage a battle that is invisible to the eye, we need spiritual power. Spiritual power manifests itself as a combination of spiritual strength, intellectual strength, and physical strength. When we are possessed of this spiritual power, financial strength and social strength will follow. We first need to discover the spiritual strength by which we can survive on our own, though no one may help us. And we need to have the power to go together for the sake of world evangelization. We must discover this blessing anew from today.
- How can we restore the power of the Gospel in our everyday lives? Let us begin individual worship through which we can become strengthened in the Lord. Let us make scheduled worship into the best time to recharge our spiritual, intellectual, physical, financial, and social strengths.
