Very small devotion for the Gospel
Romans 16:14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the brothers with them. ♬ Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #289 What a Wonderful Change (#208 in previous version)
Paul says to greet Phlegon. The Bible has no explanation about Phlegon and mentions his name only once among the list of many disciples. Paul shared the Gospel with a man named Phlegon, whom we know little about, and yet from God’s perspective that had become a great ministry. Although our devotion for evangelism and missions does not seem like much, it will bear great fruit.
1. The eyes of those who have the Gospel
Those who have the Gospel know the nature of spiritual problems and the solution to them. Therefore, when they see people in difficulties, they first take compassion on them. When those who know the spiritual problems and the solution to them see people in difficulties, they do not merely give aid to them but see them with important eyes. That is why Jesus, during His earthly ministry, first went to those who were facing difficulties. Peter, too, went to the crippled man first. Paul, too, shared the Gospel with people who were given to fortunetelling, idolatry, and shamanism. If people know the spiritual aspect, they will not look down upon the weak, the poor or the ignorant. If we do not have these eyes open, evangelism and missions will be difficult.
2. The Gospel that raises the powerless and turns them into the powerful
When Jesus called the twelve disciples, He only called powerless people and transformed them into people who have the power to save the age. Paul called a sinner like Onesimus and turned him into a great evangelist. Onesimus was a slave to Philemon, and after committing a theft at Philemon’s house, he was put in prison, and it was there that he met Paul and received the Gospel. Philemon was an elder at the church of Colosse, and later Onesimus became the overseer of the church. With a plain ordinary man Phlegon in mind, Paul included Phlegon’s name in his letter and greeted him.
3. The blessing that blossoms in the heart of those who are weak
If we are indeed in the Gospel, we will not stumble by conflicts, temptations or quarrels but help those who are weak. When we first begin or try to correctly lead our Christian walk of faith, we may experience conflicts, temptations or quarrels with others. We must not be deceived by these things. The conflicts and trials that come through people are the channels of attack that Satan uses to hinder us from receiving grace. We will receive great answers if we are not deceived by Satan.
-Through the genuine eyes of the Gospel, look at the people around you who are weak and make plans to share the Gospel with them.
