Joshua who experienced the works of God
Deuteronomy 34:1~12 Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses. (9) Moses received the greatest blessing of raising and relaying the Gospel to the next generation. In particular, Joshua spent 40 years with Moses in the wilderness witnessing and experiencing first-hand miracles and works of God. Wherever Moses went, Joshua went with him, and later became Moses’ successor as the leader of the Israelites. Joshua was a man who was filled with God-given wisdom and spiritual insight. What are the works that Joshua experience?
1. The works of God that Joshua witnessed through Moses
Joshua listened to Moses’ words of faith, and saw God’s miracles up close. When the Israelites’ unbelief and complaints were growing increasingly before the Red Sea, Joshua saw how Moses waited in prayer and came to believe that God would fulfill His miracles. After delivering the Israelites from Egypt, works of God took place in the wilderness centered on the tabernacle. This was no ordinary miracle. If we see and experience the works of God, we will also receive the spirit of wisdom, just like Joshua.
2. The work of God Joshua experienced
On the way to the wilderness, the Israelites had to fight against the Amalekites. During battle, Joshua personally experienced the works of God. Until then, he had merely been a witness. But it was at this point that the works of God became his very own. During this time, Moses was praying on a mountain with two hands raised to the Lord. Moses had raised Joshua as a person who saw the works of God and took it as his own. Even after the scouting expedition to Canaan, when the 10 other spies said taking the city would not be possible, only Joshua and Caleb insisted that it was. That was because he knew the works of God, and had experienced them.
3. The work of God that Joshua relayed and enjoyed
The Israelites broke down the walls of Jericho and restored God’s covenant. When we fall into despair over little things, or find that our faith is not being restored because of our ulterior motives and greed, we need to make choices according to the Word as we wait. Following the Word is the same as what Joshua did as he saw and followed the works of God. And we must enable our descendants to see and experience the very same blessings.
