An event in the Early Church
Acts 1:3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. ♬ Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #336 Faith of Our Fathers (#383 in previous version) Many churches and believers work hard to do charity and work diligently for the church. However, there is something we must really restore. The Early Church that began from Mark’s upper room was not simply a place of charity work or devotion. It was a small work but it saved people, changed the field, and saved the age from serious spiritual problems. How was the Early Church able to see God’s work and experience God’s power even though they were weak and persecuted? As we look at the Early Church, what mystery should today’s churches and believers discover?
1. They focused on the work of God’s kingdom
The Early Church knew when and how God’s work began. After sharing the Word about the kingdom of God for 40 days with the resurrected Lord, important works of answers began. When people who could connect with the mystery of God’s kingdom gathered and prayed, the work of the Holy Spirit arose on the day of the Pentecost and completely transformed the field. They prayed for the kingdom of God that Jesus spoke of to be established and followed, and the work of the Holy Spirit that was like fire and wind happened. Let’s focus on the mystery of God’s kingdom.
2. They thought only of the Gospel and started concentrated prayer
If we realize how precious one believer is, we will begin to pray for each other. The Early Church did not look at each other’s inadequacies but only looked upon God and prayed holding on to the covenant. Jesus told them to think of only the Gospel, pray no matter what hardship came, and to wait for God’s kingdom to come. They concentrated in prayer for 10 days with this covenant, and they saved the world and tasted the work of God that saved the world and age. It is the covenant of concentrated prayer that you must enjoy today.
3. They became witnesses for world evangelization
Disciples of Jesus asked when the kingdom of God would be restored. Jesus answered this purely physical question by answering: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be witnesses to the ends of the earth.” We cannot find the mystery of the kingdom of God with human methods. We can taste it only through the work of the Holy Spirit. The Early Church that had their spiritual eyes opened while they prayed with the covenant received the power to change the field and became witnesses for world evangelization.
