Abraham who built an altar
Genesis 13:14~18 So Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the Lord. (18) Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #289 What a Wonderful Change (#208 in previous version) Even though Abraham’s family served God, not everything went smoothly. He thought he was obeying the Word of God and did all things according to God’s will, and yet things became more difficult for him. When things get difficult, most of the time, we lose hold of the covenant of God without holding onto it, even if we know it. Abraham, who had thought that he was serving God the right way, did not know why everything was not going smoothly. What is it that Abraham lost hold of?
1. Failure due to unbelief and spiritual problems
Whenever problems arose, Abraham had unbelief first. He thought he was serving God the right way, but in fact he was disbelieving God’s Word. Unbelief is our thoughts taking precedence over the Word of God. If our thoughts take precedence over the Word, it is not easy for us to discern what exactly our spiritual problems are. Spiritual problems are Satan’s pathway that causes us to fail in our lives. We must cast aside our unbelief, find out our spiritual problems that are Satan’s pathway and begin the prayer of laying them down before God.
2. Resolution of Abraham who built an altar
Having arrived at the land of Canaan, Abraham had no food and there was a famine in the land. On top of that, there was a family dispute because of his nephew Lot. Because he thought that he was serving God correctly, Abraham was not aware of why hardships kept on coming. Moreover, he was not holding onto the covenant of God in actuality. This is our problem today. Even though it was a bit late, Abraham realized that nothing would work by his own thoughts, restored the covenant and began to build an altar before God.
3. Promise and answers that God has given to us
God does not want us to perform big and numerous tasks. What is important is whether the center of our heart is standing before God or not. Having restored faith by grabbing hold of the covenant, Abraham knew that God would prepare a ram in advance when he took his beloved son Isaac to the mountain. Because of Abraham who chose faith before God’s covenant, his offspring received blessings. Ultimately, the covenant of God was fulfilled through the offspring of Abraham. - Before we begin the day, if we have any unbelief or worries in our thoughts, let us stop all our thoughts and restore the time of wholly looking to God alone.
