Receive God-given strength
1 Samuel 3:1~21 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions. (1) The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. (19) Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #441 Once it Was the Blessing (#498 in previous version) The Israelites who were supposed to worship the Lord instead turned to idolatry and ended up leading the kind of lives they did not want. Children of God can neither receive answers nor succeed when they live and make choices identical to the people of the world. Children of God can only succeed with the method of God. In an age where the Word of God is rare, how did Samuel and David look at the world in order to succeed?
1. They had the eyes to see reality and the power to overcome fear
When people’s spiritual eyes were dim and the world was writhing in misery under darkness, God prepared a person with the covenant in each age to save His people. When the Israelites turned to idolatry, Samuel and David instead guarded the Ark of the Covenant and looked to God’s plan. Even when the Philistine army besieged Israel, David did not fear because he believed in God’s power. When our spiritual eyes grow dim, we will lack the outlook to see reality. We will grow desperate after wandering without being able to find the right answer. The only way to have the power to overcome fear and succeed lies in the Gospel.
2. They had wisdom to see into the future
While God-given answers may take on a truly peaceful form, sometimes, they arrive in the guise of problems or difficulties. When faced with difficulties, we cannot fall into the misconception of thinking we are unlucky. Children of God ought to listen and follow the Word of God. They will never succeed if they prioritize status, background, education, or money. Through prayer that connected with God, Samuel and David were both able to open the eyes of seeing into the future even in the midst of difficulties. The meeting of Samuel, who received answers, and David, who would save the future, was a meeting that signaled life for the future.
. They received the answer of realizing the spiritual truth
God gave a prophecy of doom regarding the idol-worshipping Israelites. Many people march forward toward high aspirations, and strive for good things; however, without God-given answers and strength, they will crumble easily. Samuel and David knew the spiritual truth and ended up receiving the strength to save the world through focused prayer. While unbelievers receive the power delivered by the forces of darkness, children of God must instead focus on God to receive the spiritual strength that will save the world.
