People in the midst of misconceptions
Jonah 1:1~7 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, we went aboard ad sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. (2~3) Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #289 What a Wonderful Change (#208 in previous version) Many people in the world think that they can solve their problems and prevent disaster by the power of man. In the Bible, Jonah too thought that he could change God’s will according to his wishes on his own. When we forget the spiritual reality, we will forget God’s plan and face difficulty. In order to escape our misconceptions and truly realize God’s strength, what must we do?
1. Misconceptions of the people of the world
Many people have the misconception that what they see is everything. Assyria and Nineveh looked like such great civilizations, but in fact, were corrupt because it lacked the Gospel. Persia, Rome, Babylon and Egypt also seemed like superpowers, but in fact were walking the path to destruction. When we think of what is visible as our standard, we will never know the spiritual truth. We must realize the commission of seeing the spiritual state of the world accurately and of saving with the Gospel the people who are spiritually dying.
2. Misconception of the Israelites
God gave the Israelites the covenant of Jesus Christ, but the Israelites failed to realize His commission regarding evangelism and missions and refused to relay the Gospel to the Gentiles. Jonah also suffered because he failed to properly realize God’s meaning of relaying the Gospel to other people. When we realize God’s plan for world evangelization and align our lives with God’s desires, God will bless and guide us.
3. Misconceptions of the church
When the church does not have the Gospel, there is nothing that differentiates it from other religions. Devotion and volunteerism is important, but the core of the church must be rooted in the Gospel and evangelism. There are churches that put focus on material goods and power over the Gospel, and consider societal activities and good works more important than relaying the Gospel. We must realize the reason why God has raised the church, and pray for the church to relay solely the Gospel that Jesus is the Christ and to put its emphasis on evangelism.
