Do not let your hearts be troubled
John 14:1~18 “Do not let your heats be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (1~3) Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #90 I’ve Found a Friend (#98 in previous version) When plagued with insecurity and uncertainty because of a persistent problem, it is difficult to let go of disturbing thoughts even as we go to sleep. The more we resolve to forget, the deeper our anxieties become. It becomes difficult to maintain our Christian walk of faith, and the only thing that grows is our worry. How can we become deeply rooted in our hearts, let go of all our anxieties, and enjoy true, God-given peace?
1. Live a life obedient to the Word of God
Jacob preferred to stay at home with his mother and was consequently mocked as being a weak-willed man. Joseph’s brothers resented him, so much so that they sold him into slavery. David barely overcame death as he fled from King Saul. Abraham, who was constantly worried about his livelihood, abandoned everything and left Ur of Chaldeans. A momentary worry can hurt us and fill us with anxiety and despair. But the path of the children of God leads to blessings. Let us simply follow the Word of God without being skeptical.
2. Find my own method of prayer
Without persecution from the Jewish people or the harassment from the Roman emperor, the members of the Early Church may never have realized the accurate Gospel, let alone the covenant of world evangelization. They prayed and evangelized in hiding, but were led to the blessing of world evangelization in the most unthinkable of ways. We need to find our own method of prayer and enjoy the mystery of prayer in the midst of difficulties, just like the Early Church members.
3. Pray for yourself and the mystery of the kingdom of God
When we are anxious and dismayed, the forces of darkness that are prowling like roaring lions will overtake our lives (1 Peter 5:8). Even though our background is the kingdom of God, the evil forces of darkness tempt us away from enjoying our time of communication with God. Instead of wishing they were not there, we must instead realize that suffering is an opportunity to transform our lives. We must pray for the background of the kingdom of God to abide in our individual lives, thoughts, and hearts.
- If we cannot gain spiritual strength, not only is it difficult to worship, life itself becomes very difficult. Set aside some alone time with God during the course of the day, and ask God for His power rather than attempting to rely on other people. Pastors’ Wives Retreat Lecture 2 / 2012.5.1
