Evangelism enjoyed by the Early Church
Acts 6:1~7 “Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” (3~4) Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #407 Dying with Jesus (#465 in previous version) If you view the Early Church through worldly eyes, the people appear weak. However, God was most pleased that the Early Church believers enjoyed the blessing of evangelism and became workers for world evangelization. Although many believers feel burdened by evangelism, it is God who works through evangelism, not through human power. Moreover, evangelism is not an obligation but a blessing and an answer. How did the Early Church enjoy the blessing of evangelism?
1. The Early Church enjoyed four things
Despite facing true hardships, the Early Church enjoyed four blessings. First, the Early Church believers were filled with faith. They viewed the world through spiritual eyes while trusting in God’s power. Second, they were filled with wisdom. Despite lacking education and power, God gave them wisdom so that they were able to discern problems from a spiritual perspective. Third, they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They enjoyed the filling of the Holy Spirit and they established the church and found a pastor to take care of the church. Lastly, they were full of praise. Wherever they went, people were made alive and they testified to the living God.
2. As the Word spread, the disciples increased in number (Acts 6:7)
The evangelism movement did not take place through the efforts of the Early Church. When they experienced God’s power, without any special effort, the evangelism movement arose and the movement of the Word took place in the field. As people in the workplace and schools began to believe, disciples were raised and the evangelism movement flourished in the field. If I deeply enter the Gospel, the evangelism movement will inevitably take place.
3. Answers will continue
As you continue to focus on the message, you will continue to receive answers. The martyrdom of Stephen was a historical event that began the evangelism movement to save the age (Acts 7:54~60). Additionally, God opened the doors of Samaria and through the Ethiopian eunuch, he opened the field of evangelism to new lands. The Early Church met workers who were important to the evangelism movement including Cornelius and Lydia. The important thing is that all things began with the Gospel. Answers will follow when the roots of the message are deeply inscribed.
