Looking at the world by God’s standard
Genesis 12:1~9 “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” (2)
Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #289 What a Wonderful Change in my Life (#208 in previous version)
Good things don’t always happen in life. We become anxious and fearful when we walk an unfamiliar road, and we roll our feet and worry before problems. If you meet a person without faith in this state, then you lose even more strength, fall into unbelief, your thoughts become complicated, and you talk with remorse. Unbelief is relayed even if you do not say it in words. Am I a person of faith or unbelief? What must I do in order to look at the world with God’s standards?
1. Resolution of faith
God called Abraham and told him to leave everything and go to Canaan. Even then, his physical calculations preceded his every action. However, after sending off his nephew Lot, he makes a resolution of faith. Even when God commands him to sacrifice his son, Isaac, he once again makes a resolution of faith. Even after Abraham had victory in the war against the king of Sodom, the king surrendered and brought before Abraham a great many riches. Even then, Abraham doesn’t receive the gift and instead professes his faith before God. Although Abraham valued humanism and his physical life importantly, he restored faith toward God and made a resolution. When a problem comes and an event happens and you must make a decision, you will not fail if you think about it from God’s standards.
2. Unchanging covenant
Abraham looked at his own weaknesses and lacking and had unbelief in God’s Word. No matter what he did, he was busy making a living and did not have the strength to live on. The world was not easy just to live by relying on God’s Word. Although he suffered until he realized, he finally discovered the reason to save the age within his suffering. God’s covenant did not change and was fulfilled through Abraham who confessed his faith
3. The work that God has prepared
The politics, economy, and culture of Chaldea continued to develop, but it became a land of curses because its people did not look to God and worshiped idols. God did not leave Abraham in that land dying from idol worship but made him leave to the promised land of Canaan. He followed God’s command and left Chaldea and went to the land of Canaan. At first, he fell into unbelief because there was a famine in the land, but ultimately, after he saw what God had prepared in Canaan, he restored his faith. When we look from our perspective, it looks like suffering, but if we can see what God has prepared, we will restore our faith and have victory.
- You will be victorious just by following the Word of God. Do not be deceived by the environment, situation, and problems; like Abraham, hold onto the Word of the covenant and make a resolution of faith. Immanuel Church Sunday Worship 1st Service / 2012.1.29
