Eyes to see myself and the world
Acts 1:1~8 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” (4~5)
Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #488 My Hope is Built on Nothing Less (#539 in previous version)
A student wants to study well and go to a good school, and adults want to find a stable job. However, if their circumstances or situation is difficult, they have no strength to live on and come to resent God and their parents. They complain, “Does God who leads my life really exist in the world?” They think it is an answer from God when good things happen and have unbelief when bad things happen. What should we do with our lives that do not go according to our desires?
1. Assurance of the Gospel
When Jesus taught His disciples, he asked, “Who do you say I am?” Disciples who were asked the question answered according to their own thoughts that He was Jeremiah, John the Baptist, or a prophet. However, Peter who had the faith that Jesus is the Christ gave the bold confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. For our thoughts and knowledge are expressed variously through our background or the depth of our knowledge, we must change our thoughts into thoughts given by God. The more I get rid of my thoughts, the more I gain the wisdom of God.
2. Mystery of the guidance of the Holy Spirit
A person with lots of thoughts has difficulty reaching an agreement with someone else. A person who cannot agree with others and pushes his opinions on others cannot see a problem factually and is arrogant. God does not like arrogant individuals. We cannot live in the world by our own level and standards and we do not have the wisdom to walk toward the correct path. In order for a child of God to survive, he must receive the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
3. Strength of the filling of the Holy Spirit
The filling of the Holy Spirit is the strength that God gives. Joseph who enjoyed the mystery of the filling of the Holy Spirit considered his life as a slave as an environment that God gave. Because David who was filled with the Holy Spirit knew the plan of God, he was not fearful even in the face of death. The strength from God is a strength that no man can fathom. If you pray to receive the filling of the Holy Spirit, your thoughts will be changed into thoughts that God desires and, therefore, you will be able to make a decision of faith in any situation. When you have this strength, you will live, your environment will change, and the world will change.
