Look to the things above
Colossians 3:1~4 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. (2~3)
Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #92 There’s One Above All Earthly Friends (#97 in previous version) In the beginning, Paul was a man who persecuted the believers of Jesus. One day, Paul repented on his way to Damascus and came to believe in Jesus. The Pharisees who were shocked by this incident formed a special team whose aim was to kill Paul. Paul, however, never wavered and was bold. How was it that he was able to stand boldly in the face of death? Paul was sure that the end would come when the Gospel was preached to all nations and that there was nothing that he needed in addition to the status and authority that he enjoyed as a child of God. This is the confession of Paul who had this assurance. “Set your minds not on earthly things but on things above.” If we are only enjoying this blessing, we can have victory even in the midst of any hardships. What then are the ‘things above’?
1. Thanksgiving and gratitude for salvation
Paul gave thanks, knowing how great the blessing for the saved was. When we truly realize the thanksgiving for salvation, we will come to open important sets of eyes. In the midst of problems and difficulties, Paul came to see the blessing of uniqueness. Paul discovered that the reason why he went to prison was that it was the only way for him to share the Gospel to the Roman emperor and dampen the persecutions by the Jews. The saved will never perish because of their problems. Before anything else, look for genuine thanksgiving for the blessing of salvation.
2. Four convictions
Paul was never afraid because he carried these four convictions with him. First, Paul discovered that Christ is the mystery of all answers and in Him is everything (Colossians 3:1). Second, he realized that if he found the spiritual things that God gives from above, then there is no need for him to worry about anything (Colossians 3:2). Third, he knew that God absolutely guarantees the saved in Christ (Colossians 3:3). Fourth, he knew that God takes full responsibility for the saved, especially evangelists (Colossians 3:4). Paul had these convictions as he looked to things above.
3. Blessing of the Gospel and the evangelism movement
The most important covenant in the Bible was answered and fulfilled through Paul. All the words written in the Bible will be fulfilled through evangelists in the future. The Gospel transformed politics, finances, culture, and society. God moves world history around the Gospel and the evangelism movement. If so, then it is a great blessing that we have the Gospel and are standing among the ranks of the evangelists. We must not look to earthly things but find the things of above.
- If the people who have received the blessing of salvation look to earthly things, they will fall into conflicts and worries. As we think about things above, let’s make a notebook where we can jot down daily the things that we are thankful for and prepare ourselves with the nature to save the world.
