Apply prayer personally!
Philippians 4:6~7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (6~7)
Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #204 Those Who Hear and Do the Word (#379 in previous version) Many people come to church and pray together during worship, and often form teams to pray for each other. But if we examine this closely, many are praying in a mystical way, or are merely following the tide of church programs. When most people are alone, they are unable to pray. Prayer must be personally applied, and must take place even when we are alone. Then, how can individuals apply prayer in their lives?
1. Beginning of prayer training
First, just as it is easiest to approach people with what they like, it is easiest to approach prayer with what fits best with God’s will. People of ill health can pray for restoration of physical fitness, Remnants to receive brainpower to aid in their studies, and because a majority of lay people are facing financial issues, we need to train in prayer to receive power. The best thing at this point is meditation. People of the world attempt meditation to empty themselves of their thoughts, but when we meditate within the Gospel to be filled with the Holy Spirit, great powers will undoubtedly manifest. When we hold firmly onto the Word of God, we will have power, health, brainpower, and strength.
2. Content of prayer
What we need most as people with salvation is the filling of the Holy Spirit. Try praying to the Holy Spirit for spiritual strength, intellectual strength, physical strength, financial strength, and strength in interpersonal relationships. As His children, we have immense authority vested in us by God. We must pray while utilizing this authority. More than any other prayer topic, praying for the Gospel, evangelism movement and world evangelization is paramount. When we have special circumstances or a particularly important problem, we must focus on prayer regarding that matter.
3. Method of prayer
When we pray, we must be most at ease. We can never maintain prayer if praying is complex and arduous. We don’t have to go out of our way to set aside a specific time. Rather, we can pray as soon as we wake up and before we go to bed. We must have the happiest vision and dreams during the time of prayer. We must draw the picture of disciples rising up, changing the world culture, and posterity arising to save their generation. It is at this time that we can be happy both in body and mind, and gain spiritual strength. It is important to make a platform out of our past scars while looking solely to God, and make current problems into an opportunity for renewal, and transcend our own levels with strength gained through prayer.
