One worthy of the battle
Numbers 1:1~4 You and Aaron are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army. One man from each tribe, each of them the head of his family, is to help you (3~4)
Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #521 Straight is the Gate to Salvation (#253 in previous version)
The book is titled Numbers because it counted the numbers in each tribe. They counted how many could fight and how many could be given important tasks. God spoke to the Israelites of conquering the land of Canaan, where the Messiah would come. However, that land was occupied by seven unbelieving tribes, with strong fortresses and idolatry filling the land. This is the same in today’s field of our lives. People of the world build fortresses of intellect, health, wealth, and prestige, serving other things that are not God. Because the spiritual battle is unavoidable in this field, God counts the numbers needed to fight, prepares for battle, and tells us to attain the power needed. How can you gain the strength necessary for the spiritual warfare?
1. You must grasp the evidences within God’s covenant.
No matter how successful a person may be, failure is inevitable with no spiritual strength. With no strength, you will only make excuses for all matters. However, an individual with strength never wavers amidst any circumstances or problems. The Israelites were liberated through the blood of the lamb (Exodus 3:18), and God performed ten different miracles. He also split the Red Sea and blessed His people with the three feasts (Passover, Pentecost, Feast of Unleavened Bread) to hold onto. In addition, He provided the covenant and evidence to be victorious if you live centered on the Ark of the Covenant. We must not lose hold of the important evidences within God’s Word. God’s Word of promise will absolutely be fulfilled and answered.
2. You must open your spiritual eyes.
Satan, our spiritual enemy, is destroying man (Genesis 3:5) and attacking us invisibly through the culture (Genesis 6:4). Hence, God gave us an immense spiritual background. The Holy Spirit works, the heavenly forces are mobilized, and the forces of darkness are devastated when we pray. We must hold to this covenant and confirm it in our lives.
3. You must hold to conviction for the future.
We have a future of reaching the land of Canaan. The reason and purpose for that is because it is the land that the Messiah will come. We must go forth with the covenants of Christ and world evangelism. The Jordan River will split and the wall of Jericho will crumble when we hold to the conviction for the future. Therefore, we need faith and spiritual strength.
- We must gain spiritual strength every day as children of God. Meditate on the contents and methods by which you can gain the strength to overcome spiritual powerlessness.
