True devotion

1 Chronicles 29:10~14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” (14)

Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #151 Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed (#138 in previous version)

How can we live the life of the evangelist? In order to live the life of the evangelist, we need the correct understanding regarding the Gospel. Depending on how we understand the Gospel, all our thoughts and actions are determined, and the color, content, and method of our prayers change. There is a life that results from the correct understand of the Gospel and the enjoyment of prayer and that is devotion. True devotion stems from the correct understanding of the Gospel and prayer. What is it that we must not lose hold of for the sake of true devotion?

1. True devotion results in true answers.
David didn’t suddenly muster up his courage to fight against Goliath and build the temple. He remembered the covenant of God that he had heard since he was a young child that was impressed upon him by his anointing as king by Samuel. Even when he was faced with hardship, he was not shaken, and when he tended the flocks and lived the life of a shepherd, he acted with a sense of commission. Through Samuel, David heard about the Ark of the Covenant and the temple, and he placed that in his heart as his lifelong desire. This became the strength by which he was able to take part in true devotion.

2. True devotion gives all but results in the greatest blessings.
If you misunderstand devotion, it sounds like we have to sacrifice everything. Devotion is only possible because we have received all blessings and answers. God’s greatest blessing is hidden within true devotion. Jesus promised that even a cup of water will not lose its reward. The evangelist Paul said that our labor for the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). The reason why the Israelites were destroyed is because they lost hold of the commission regarding devotion, and the failure of the church of the Middle Ages is also attributed to the fact that they lost hold of true devotion after having their eyes grow dim from power and material wealth.

3. True devotion saves the church.
David confessed that he could not sleep because the Ark of the Covenant was in a windblown tent while he himself was in a fine palace. This must become our prayer. With the disappearance of the churches that preach the Gospel, spiritual problems will only grow more severe and many people will face hardships as a result of suicidal tendencies, mental problems, financial issues, and disharmony between family members. God’s church is the one and only way to stop the disasters from plowing into the individual, family, nation, and the world. It is God’s greatest desire to testify of the Gospel through the establishment of a correct church through our true devotion.

- Deeply meditate on the words ‘true devotion.’ Then, think about what kind of devotion we must give for the church.
