Philippians 2:12~18 For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (13)

‘Drink offering’ refers to the ancient sacrificial habit of pouring wine on the offering. Paul brought up this behavior as he foretold his own martyrdom. He confessed that even if he was to be poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice, he was not afraid but rejoice because of the faith and Christian journey of the members of the church of Philippi (Philippians 2:17~18). What does Paul’s confession reveal?
1. Spiritual state
Before we start receiving prayer answers, our spiritual states are very important. This is because many things change depending on my spiritual state within the Gospel. Joseph was a person who enjoyed the presence of the Lord Jehovah in his life even in prison, and he prospered as a result. Samuel and David also respected and enjoyed God’s Word at an early age. When our spiritual states are upright and we enjoy spiritual strength in each moment, we can overcome any peril that falls our way.
2. The state of our heart
Paul confessed that he would rejoice even in death. This speaks of the state of Paul’s heart- that is, it reveals the centermost desire of Paul’s heart. In prison, as he faced the possibility of execution, Paul spoke three things. “Continue to work out your salvation (Philippians 2:12)” is translated into ‘epecho’ in Greek, meaning ‘to hold firmly, to make into a goal, and to pay attention.’ Thus, Paul is imploring us to hold firmly on to salvation. “Do everything without complaining or arguing (Philippians 2:14)” means that we must not take up the position of complaining with malicious intent. “But even if I am being poured like a drink offering (Philippians 2:17)” means that Paul was content to be martyred and that he had nothing to fear. This was the state of Paul’s heart.
3. The state of our lives
Even while imprisoned, Paul enjoyed the greatest answers and was able to relay the Word of God to the church at Philippi. Not only that, despite having endured unspeakable amounts of persecution and crises, Paul was able to enjoy indubitable victory by enjoying Christ in a fearless state of spirit, mind and life.
- When our spiritual lives are upright and we are able to gain spiritual strength, our physical bodies and environment will begin to change. Meditate on the way to enjoy this blessing 24 hours a day.
