How to listen to the Word of God
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Many people do not take the Word of God to heart even after listening to sermons and end up not being led by God in their Christian journey. This is because our spiritual states go hand-in-hand with the work of the Holy Spirit. How can we restore our spiritual state and experience the work of the Holy Spirit?
1. How to enjoy the Word
When we listen to the Word of God, we must understand the background in which it was recorded, including the historical context, author, and the author’s intent in order for the Word to hit close to our hearts through the work of the Holy Spirit. This is God-given grace and the future to which we must hold. God granted the messenger on the pulpit as a guide to His Word; we need only to seek the message God intends for me through the messenger’s gestures, tone, and emphasis.
2. My spiritual state
We listen to many messages and lectures, but what is more important is the spiritual state of the listener. A tree planted by the stream in fertile ground will bear fruit, but a tree planted in withered, barren land cannot bear fruit. Likewise, our futures are determined by the spiritual state in which the Word is planted, and will change according to our attitudes in the face of problems. When faced with the same problem, Joseph and his brothers reached very different decisions. King Saul and David too faced the same problem, but their spiritual state was distinctly divergent.
3. What we must do first
If I listen to the Word of God with my spiritual state as-is, I cannot hold God’s great grace. Only when we change our spiritual state can we enjoy our lives within the Word and be healed of our spiritual problems through worship. Worship is given to hear the voice and Word of God regardless of the messenger and the message itself. Through the enjoyment of prayer, the Word will become further enlivened and active and expand into the mystery of evangelism that will change our surroundings and the field. Ultimately, through the blessing of prayer and evangelism taking place, my obstinate and hardened nature will change as well.
- What is my state that continues to hinder and prevent the grace of God? Deeply meditate on the Word you received through today’s Prayer Journal and focus on hearing the voice of God.
