Pride of being humble
Philippians 1:1~2 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (1~2)
Hymn for scheduled worship: Korean/English Hymnal #369 What a Friend We Have in Jesus (#487 in previous version)
When frustrating things happen, many people are at a loss for what to do. Philippians is an epistle of Paul that he wrote when he was imprisoned. Paul did not question what he should do, even when he was in prison. Paul had been doing scheduled prayer on a regular basis, through which he enjoyed the fact that God was with him. Before work or missions he enjoyed concentrated prayer through which he received answers to prayer, and he enjoyed the blessing of 24-hour prayer in the Holy Spirit. If you enjoy these three kinds of prayer, you will see great things and have important spiritual pride.
1. Things about the self
As he enjoyed important prayer, Paul deeply enjoyed what the blessing of salvation is. Paul’s spiritual problem was not solved even though he kept the law and studied the Word, but when he met Christ he received answers to everything (Acts 9:15). Regardless of his knowledge, he gained many answers in the Gospel through Barnabas (Acts 11:25~26), and he came to know great grace through his big spiritual problem (2 Corinthians 12:1~10).
2. My identity
If you are not deceived by your circumstances, then you can see your identity. Paul expressed himself as a servant of Jesus Christ. At the time, a servant was a slave. Nevertheless, Paul was thankful and felt great pride in the fact that he became a servant of Jesus Christ and was sitting in prison. You can see two things when you are not deceived by circumstances or people. All of our beginning is God’s grace, and all of our answer is God’s peace.
3. Unique opportunity
Prison is a hard and exhausting place, but to Paul, it was a unique opportunity. The Gospel came upon the Early Church. However, the Jews blocked the preaching of the Gospel by law. At the time, the Jewish nation was a colony of Rome. So, Paul decided to appeal to the court of Rome. This was because if he lawfully wins Rome, the Gospel will not be blocked but be witnessed to the entire world. That is why Paul gave thanks for going to prison. The believers of the Early Church were powerless people, but in the eyes of Paul who had the Gospel, they were like precious jewels. If you enjoy answers from God now, then what others perceive as crises or suffering will be amazing opportunities for you.
- Paul was in prison, but he was not in failure. Even though you have a problem, you will not fail. So that you may receive strength from God, enter into the blessing of prayer.
