The priest’s garments
Exodus 28:1~5 Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron, to give him dignity and honor. Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest. (2~3)

After escaping from Egypt, the Israelites thought they would receive tremendous blessings immediately, but the wilderness was a terrible hardship for them. They knew the splendors of the past and the blessings of the future all too well, but the present problems regarding food, shelter and clothing were not just ordinary problems. They didn’t know what would happen or when. There was the danger of constant enemies, the rumors they heard about the 7 tribes in the land of Canaan, a shortage of water, extreme cold and heat, and words of disbelief flying around them constantly. The wilderness seemed to be filled with problems. However, with every problem comes a solution. What was God’s answer?
1. Go to Mount Sinai
We must look back on why the Israelites lost hold of the covenant and lived as slaves for 400 years. Even though they had come out of Egypt, they were unable to completely escape their past and the darkness. God told them to firmly grab hold of His Word. We must reflect back on our parents’ lives and our own life thus far and find an answer. Holding solemnly to the Word given to us today, we must restore our faith in God’s plan and time schedule, and wait.
2. Make a tabernacle
God commanded them to make a tabernacle to preserve the Ark of the Covenant. When the Israelites held to the Word on Mount Sinai, He told them to build the tabernacle and receive His guidance. Moreover, He told them to keep an eternal flame burning inside the tabernacle by gaining the power of prayer. God desires for us to realize and enjoy the mystery of true worship that chases away darkness.
3. Change your garments
Those garments refer to our status. While in Egypt, the Israelites wore the garments of slaves. After the exodus, the very first thing they did was to rid themselves of those garments of slavery. Just as the father of the prodigal son first bathed and clothed his son upon his return home, saved children of God must change their garments to garments that reflect their changed status. Aaron was commanded to put on priestly garments. It was not Aaron who was priestly and sacred, but the garments themselves were deemed sacred. The moment we received salvation by faith, we too were given priestly blessings. He says, “You are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God” (1Peter 2:9). We must clothe ourselves with Christ because nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Romans 8:39).
